Leaked documents prove Glin\u0161ek lied in court about his control of a Seychelles company to avoid a conviction. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content=\"\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cKeep your lashes long and your standards high,\u201d proclaims a pastel-hued Instagram ad for Lux Factor cosmetics, illustrated with a sketch of a coquettishly winking woman with lustrous hair and eyelashes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The brand\u2019s social media page, which is followed by over 15,000 people, touts its top sellers: eyelash growth serum and something called \u201c4D Hyaluron anti-wrinkle cream.\u201d Lux Factor promises its products will enhance the growth of \u201cnew and longer lashes\u201d by up to 25 percent, and make skin look \u201c80 percent younger.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Slovenian businessman behind the brand, Marko Glin\u0161ek, was convicted last year of deceiving customers. Slovenia\u2019s national tax office said he had also dodged at least 360,000 euros in taxes by faking invoices.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Glin\u0161ek fought back in court by arguing that the Slovenian incarnation of Lux Factor was merely a distributor of the cosmetics, and that he shouldn\u2019t have been liable for sales taxes \u2014 or responsible for the standard of the products \u2014 because the real seller was another company called Lux Factor, based in the Seychelles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Glin\u0161ek also claimed that a U.K. subsidiary of Lux Factor invoiced the customers on behalf of this same Seychelles company. The court in Slovenia could only find a local director connected to the company, which meant Glinsek&#8217;s control of the firm remained a secret. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Now, though, documents from the Pandora Papers \u2014 a massive leak to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists of documents from 14 offshore service providers, shared with media partners around the world \u2014 reveal that Glin\u0161ek himself started Lux Factor in the Seychelles, and had full control of the company. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Documents from the leak show that Glin\u0161ek paid SFM, a Dubai-based corporate services provider, more than 1,500 euros to set up Lux Factor in the Seychelles for him in 2015. He paid another 720 euros to get bank accounts opened for the company in Cyprus and the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Corporate records show that the local director in the Seychelles granted him full rights to conduct business using the company, and that Glin\u0161ek had control over the company until at least April 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Even without these documents in hand, the court found Glin\u0161ek guilty of defrauding customers. In Slovenia, Sne\u017ei\u010d is known as the \u201cdoctor of tax evasion,\u201d due to his Ph.D. on the subject and the fact that he used to write a tabloid newspaper column on topics such as how to avoid paying taxes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Sne\u017ei\u010d is also suspected by both Slovenian and Bosnian authorities of leading an international money laundering network that stretches across at least four EU countries and Bosnia. In 2018, Glin\u0161ek was named as a suspect in the Bosnian investigation. A prosecution document published by Bosnian media outlet Istraga, whose authenticity was confirmed by a Slovenian government official with knowledge of the case, indicates that Glin\u0161ek had ties to Sne\u017ei\u010d\u2019s operations, but doesn\u2019t spell out the connection.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Glin\u0161ek declined to answer questions from reporters. Jan\u0161a\u2019s communications office did not respond to a request for comment. They accuse him of fabricating invoices to transfer relatively small sums \u2014 to avoid drawing attention from banking compliance departments \u2014 from Bulgarian to Bosnian bank accounts. He then transferred the money to his personal Bosnian account and withdrew it in cash, prosecutors allege. In 2018, she gave Jan\u0161a\u2019s SDS party a personal loan of 450,000 euros, which caused a political scandal in Slovenia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Despite his legal troubles in Slovenia and Bosnia \u2014 and even though Slovenian health authorities banned the sale of Lux-Factor cosmetics in 2017 \u2014 Glin\u0161ek has continued to operate the brand around Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Slovenian tax authorities told reporters this was because new companies keep popping up to evade the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c[A]s soon as FURS [the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia] blocks the websites on which \u201cLUX FACTOR\u201d products are sold in Slovenia, the advertising of \u201cLUX FACTOR\u201d brand products is transferred to other foreign companies,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Even in the course of reporting this story, O\u0161tro found that the cosmetics business had been transferred to a Polish company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But no matter where Lux-Factor is \u201cbased,\u201d it is still heavily promoting its creams and serums online, with daily posts from influencers like Hungarian model Eva Horvath or Slovenian reality TV contestant Mary Sevo, often shown applying the products to their faces and eyes in lush settings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cSkin first. Make up second. Smile always,\u201d said one recent post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<button onclick=\"window.open('https:\/\/www.ostro.si\/en\/pandora-papers', '_blank')\">\n Pandora papers\n<\/button>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content=\"\">\n<h3 style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">SFM\u2019s Disappearing British Lux Firm <\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Glin\u0161ek told the Slovenian court that Lux Factor invoiced the buyers from its London subsidiary, but this seems to be another lie: The Seychelles Lux Factor did not have a London subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">However, O\u0161tro did find a company called Lux Cosmetics in the U.K., set up by SFM in 2014 on behalf of Matja\u017e Kerndl, a Slovenian football player turned businessman. To set it up Kerndl provided his personal information, but used Glin\u0161ek\u2019s phone number and email address. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The U.K. Lux Cosmetics was only operational for 13 months. In that time it opened a bank account in the U.K. and paid SFM to procure a VAT registration number. Kerndl renewed the company for a year in November 2015 but dissolved it a month later.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kerndl\u2019s business plan for Lux Factor U.K. claimed the company would turn over 5-10 million euros in the first two years while operating in transportation, construction, and the buying and selling of trucks and trailers. In reality, Kerndl had a separate Slovenian company operating in these fields. That company is now under liquidation while creditors have raised more than 6.4 million euros of claims.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kerndl did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<br\/><br\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\" data-sqsp-text-block-content=\"\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><em>Amra D\u017eonli\u0107 (OCCRP ID),
